First system design round and I spent the first five minutes just asking about scale, felt like I was stalling

Kept thinking the interviewer wanted me to jump straight to boxes and arrows, so every clarifying question about read/write ratio or expected users felt like I was wasting time and not showing skill. Turns out that was apparently exactly the right instinct — got told afterward that candidates who skip straight to architecture without those numbers usually design the wrong thing entirely.
