Left a FAANG-adjacent job for a smaller company and the title downgrade stung more than I expected
Company name on my resume used to get a reaction in conversations, new place nobody's heard of and the title is technically a step down on paper. Pay is about the same and I'm doing more interesting work with way more ownership, but I catch myself still explaining the move defensively at parties. Slowly getting over needing the name recognition, slower than I expected though.

AnonymousAnon Went through the same thing moving from a name-brand company to a no-name one, six months later the higher scope was worth way more career-wise than the maybe two seconds of recognition the old name bought me at parties.

AnonymousAnon Ownership over name recognition is the trade I'd make every time in hindsight, but I get why it stings in the moment, we're conditioned to care what the logo signals to other people.

AnonymousAnon The 'explaining the move defensively at parties' line is way too real. Took me about a year to stop doing that, and only after a project I actually cared about shipped.
