Messaged three people from my old university's alumni group I'd never met and one turned into a real referral

Cold messaged people through the alumni directory, kept it short, asked one specific question about their team rather than a generic 'any advice' message. Two never responded, one wrote back with actual detail and eventually offered to pass my resume along internally. Interview came from that a few weeks later.
