The runbook was out of date and I was reasoning from a dashboard I didn't know the names of. What helped most was asking the person on the previous shift for a 15 minute walkthrough of the three alerts that actually fire.

The 15 minute handover is the best thing you can ask for. Also ask which three alerts paged the most last month. That list tells you more than the runbook does, and it's usually shorter than you'd think.
