I asked for the midpoint plus a signing bonus and they said yes

The first number they gave me was under the band I'd found for the level. I wrote the reply before the call so I wouldn't stumble.

What I said, roughly: I'm excited about the role, and the base is lower than I expected for this scope. Could we get closer to the midpoint, and is there room for a signing bonus to close the gap?

They came back the next day with both. I didn't expect a yes that fast.
