Read job posts from the bottom up. The nice-to-haves tell you what's broken

I stopped reading postings top to bottom. The requirements are the wish list, but the 'nice to have' section is where a team lists the thing that's hurting them. One posting asked for 'Kafka experience, a plus.' On the first screen I asked what they were replacing. Answer: a pile of cron jobs that page someone every Sunday. I didn't get that role, but the question got me a real conversation, which I hadn't gotten in about forty applications.
