I'd memorized answers from practice tests and failed by a wide margin. For the retake I read the docs for the four services that kept coming up (IAM, VPC, S3 lifecycle rules, load balancers) and worked each practice question out loud. Passed. Practice tests teach you what the answer is, not why, and the real exam keeps asking why.
