I still check every SQL join by writing down the expected row count. Bad sign?

A query at work last week returned twice the rows I expected because a left join was doing the work of an inner join. I caught it before it went out, and now I write the expected count next to every query. It feels slow, and I'm wondering if anyone has a faster way to build that habit.
