System design tip: ask what breaks first when traffic goes up tenfold

Instead of starting with the happy path, I now ask 'what breaks first?' before drawing anything. Usually it's the database or one shared cache, and that gives the conversation a backbone. The interviewer also tends to steer toward the parts I've actually thought through. Not a silver bullet, but my last two design rounds felt less like reciting a diagram.
