Recruiter asked for my current salary before a technical screen. What do you say?

I gave a number I thought was modest, and the offer came in below what I'd hoped for. I think I anchored too low. Did anyone manage to redirect that question without sounding evasive? The next screen is Thursday.

Try: 'I'm early in the search and I'd like to understand the range for this role first. What band is budgeted for it?' Some recruiters will share the band even when they skip your number, so it's worth asking the second question directly.
