Got a referral from someone I'd never met. Is silence after a thank-you normal?

A friend of a friend forwarded my application last month. I sent one thank-you message and then nothing, because I didn't want to keep bothering someone who did me a favor. Is that the normal amount of follow-up, or does it come across as cold?

A short thank-you plus one update later is plenty. When someone referred me, I sent a note after the screen and another after the decision, even when it was a no. People like knowing their help mattered. It doesn't read as pushy if you aren't asking for anything.
