Asked for a raise over email instead of in person. Took me four drafts

I figured writing gave me time to think. It also gave my manager time to think, which I hadn't expected. The final version was one paragraph: three things I shipped this year and one number. Reply came back in a day asking for a call. Still anxious, but it's moving.

Four drafts is normal. Two different managers have told me the written version gave them time to prep an answer, which made the actual conversation easier for everyone.

The email format is smart. Most people skip the one-number paragraph, and that's the part that makes it easy for them to say yes. I'd also put the ask in the first two lines so nobody has to hunt for it.
