First portfolio project if you know React but nothing about backends?

I keep building todo apps with localStorage and I know it doesn't show anyone much. I want something that forces me to deal with auth, a real database and deployment, without turning into a six-month project. What did you build that people actually asked about?

A URL shortener with rate limiting taught me more about backends than anything else. Keep the scope tiny and write up one thing that broke and how you found it.

Build a small expense tracker or job board with login and a Postgres database, then deploy it somewhere with logs you can actually read. People asked me about the data model and the deploy more than the features.
