How do you ask a manager for feedback when they never offer any?

A 1:1 about growth, or wait for the review cycle? Looking for approaches that don't come across as a complaint. Bonus points for wording that worked.

Check whether there's a written review process or a peer who gives feedback you can borrow. Sometimes the manager is the bottleneck, not the process.

A 15-minute chat framed around one goal works better than 'any feedback?'. Something like 'I want to get better at system design, what would you look for?' is specific enough to answer.
