Senior engineer or manager in five years: how did you pick?

I keep changing my answer. Some weeks I'd love to lead a team, other weeks I just want to keep building things and getting better at the hard parts. What made you pick, and did you change your mind after you got there? I'm trying to work out whether I want the ladder or the title, and I suspect those are different.
