Pair programming round: do you talk while you think, or go quiet first?

Last one, I went quiet for almost four minutes while I worked out the approach. I could feel the interviewer waiting, and when I finally talked it through I was fine. I'm just not sure whether the silence cost me. If you've been on the other side of this, what do you actually want to hear while someone is thinking?
