Referral vs cold application: how much did a referral actually change your odds?

Two of my forty applications came through a referral. Both got a recruiter call within a week. The other thirty-eight got four replies between them. Small sample, I know. I can't tell if it was the referral or my resume just landing on the right desk at the right time.
