Mock interviewer keeps giving me hints. Do I take them or push through?

Practice with a friend who's an engineer. Every time I stall for ten seconds he says 'what about a hash map?' I can't tell if that's helping me or teaching me to wait for a nudge. How did you run your mocks so they felt real?
