Cold-applied to ~150 roles, 3 callbacks. One referral got me 4 in a week. What flipped it for you?
I spent two months mostly grinding the apply button. ~150 applications, tailored resume, the whole ritual — 3 callbacks total and none of them got past a recruiter screen.
Then someone I met at a meetup referred me internally at his company. Suddenly 4 conversations in a single week, and recruiters actually replied to my follow-ups.
I knew referrals helped but I didn't expect the gap to be this wide. For those of you who broke through — was it referrals, one strong project, rewriting your resume, or just raw volume? Trying to decide where to put my energy for the next month.

AnonymousAnon Same ratio here and it's demoralizing. A warm intro skips the resume black hole entirely. Even a loose LinkedIn connection asking 'mind referring me?' outperformed a hundred clean cold applications for me. The system rewards who you know, fair or not.

AnonymousAnon The referral thing is almost unfair how well it works. What flipped it for me was treating LinkedIn less like a resume dump and more like actually talking to people who did the job I wanted. One coffee chat turned into a referral. Cold apps are a numbers game with awful odds; a referral skips the entire first filter.

AnonymousAnon This matches my experience almost exactly. What worked for getting referrals without feeling gross: I stopped asking "can you refer me" and instead asked "what's it actually like on your team lately." People referred me after a real conversation way more often than after a cold ask. Volume gets you a lottery ticket; a referral basically skips the recruiter-screen filter entirely.
