Pair-programming interview rounds scare me way more than solo coding. Any tips?

I can solve a medium fine on my own, but the second someone's watching and I have to narrate my thinking live, my brain empties out. I've got a round like this coming up and I keep imagining freezing while a stranger stares at a blank screen.

How do you practice this specifically? Is it just doing mocks until it's normal, or are there tricks for talking and coding at the same time without one killing the other? Would love to hear from people who used to hate this and got okay at it.

Pairing rounds are actually more forgiving than solo — you can ask clarifying questions and the interviewer will nudge you when you drift. Treat it as 'work with me' not 'perform for me.' Practice by pairing with a friend and narrating out loud; the only scary part is talking while coding, and that's completely trainable.

Used to completely lock up in these. What broke it: practicing easy problems while literally narrating to an empty room / my webcam. Feels ridiculous but it trains the "talk and type" muscle so it isn't brand new under pressure. Also — it's totally fine to say "let me think for a second" and go quiet briefly. Silence isn't failure; they're watching how you reason, not whether you're a live commentary machine. Real mocks with a friend are the fastest fix though.
