A cold DM got me a referral after 3 months of applications going nowhere

For anyone convinced you need a network you don't have: I messaged an engineer at a company I liked, mentioned I'd applied, and asked one specific question about their team's stack instead of begging for a referral. We traded two messages and they offered to refer me, unprompted. First interview I'd gotten in months.

It's not magic and it didn't always work. I sent maybe 15 of these and got 3 replies. But 'be genuinely curious about one specific thing' beat every 'I'm passionate and hardworking' cover letter I ever wrote.

Cold outreach gets a bad rap but a specific, non-lazy DM is basically a superpower. The ones that worked for me referenced something the person actually built and asked one concrete question — never "can you refer me." Three months of silence and then one DM cracking it tracks with my experience too.

The hard part is not making it feel transactional. If you only ever message people the moment you need a job, it shows. I try to actually engage with folks' posts for a bit first so it isn't a total cold open with an ask attached.

Can confirm the 'ask one specific question' framing works. People love talking about their own work and hate being asked for favors. Reframing from 'can you refer me' to 'genuinely curious how your team handles X' changed my reply rate completely.
