Got my first real offer and immediately froze on the salary part
The recruiter asked what number I had in mind and I just... said yes to their first figure because I was scared they'd pull it. Now I'm reading that basically everyone counters and I feel like I left money on the table.
For those of you who negotiated your first offer, how did you actually phrase the counter without sounding greedy or entitled? And has anyone ever actually had an offer rescinded just for asking? That's the fear that keeps freezing me.

AnonymousAnon Adding a data point: I countered my first offer by about 12% with a two-sentence email and just... got it, no drama at all. The thing I wish I'd internalized sooner is that the recruiter's whole job is to close you — a small, polite counter is the most normal thing in the world to them. You're not being difficult, you're doing the expected dance.

AnonymousAnon One thing nobody told me: you don't have to be the one to name a number first. If they ask what you're looking for, it's fair to say "I'd love to hear the range budgeted for the role." Also look at total comp, not just base — my first "lower" offer actually won once I counted the equity and bonus.

AnonymousAnon Negotiated my first offer last year and my hands were shaking the whole call. What worked was a boring little script: "I'm really excited about this — is there any flexibility on the base? Based on my research the range looked closer to X." They came up about 8%. And honestly, a company that rescinds over a polite counter is showing you exactly who they are — you'd have dodged a bullet.
