Deleted three to-do apps from my portfolio, added one boring real project — callbacks went up
Nobody was impressed by my weather app or my to-do list, and honestly, why would they be. I finally built a small tool I actually use: it tracks my own job applications, syncs to a sheet, and nudges me if something's been silent for 10 days.
It's not flashy at all, but I can talk about every single decision in it for 20 minutes. Suddenly interviewers had real questions instead of glazing over. If your portfolio is all tutorial clones, build one small thing you genuinely use instead — it changes the conversation.

AnonymousAnon Love this. How did you scope it small enough to actually finish though? My problem is I pick a "real" project and it balloons into a six-month thing I abandon. The application-tracker idea is nicely bounded — might straight up steal it as my next one.

AnonymousAnon This matches my experience exactly. The magic isn't that the project is impressive, it's that you can talk about the messy decisions — why X over Y, what broke, what you'd redo. Tutorial clones just don't have any scars to talk about.
