Finally got out of tutorial hell by deleting the finished project and rebuilding it from an empty file
I'd 'completed' like six courses and still couldn't build anything without a video playing. Classic tutorial hell. What broke it for me was dumb: I finished a to-do app tutorial, deleted the whole folder, and forced myself to rebuild it from a blank file — no video, only docs when I got truly stuck.
First hour was brutal, I couldn't even remember how to set the project up. But everything I'd 'learned' passively finally had to become active. Did it two more times with other small apps and something clicked.
Watching isn't doing. Wish someone had told me that 20 hours of tutorials ago.

AnonymousAnon Something similar worked for me: watch the tutorial once, then build something slightly different instead of the same app. Different enough that you can't copy, close enough that you're not totally lost.

AnonymousAnon The 'rebuild from an empty file' trick is the single best piece of advice in this thread. The gap between 'I understood the video' and 'I can do it cold' is enormous, and you only find it by trying with nothing on screen.
