Recruiter asked my salary expectations on the first screening call, before I knew anything about their band
Four minutes into the call for a role I'd been hoping for, she asks what number I'm looking for. I panicked and said "I'm flexible, whatever's standard." She wrote something down and moved on, and I've been replaying it since.
What do you say when it lands that early and you have no idea what they've budgeted?

AnonymousAnon For what it's worth, "I'm flexible" almost never sinks anything at the screening stage. They're filtering out wildly-off expectations, not locking you in. They ask again once there's an offer forming, and that's the conversation that counts.

AnonymousAnon Give a range, and make the bottom of it a number you'd be happy to accept, because the bottom is the number they hear. Better still, flip it first: "what have you budgeted for the role?" A surprising number of recruiters will just tell you.
