Turned down an offer for the first time and felt guilty about it for days

It wasn't a hard call on paper. The work was maintenance on a product they'd told me was being sunset next year, and the other conversation I had going was much closer to what I want to be doing.

But I'd been searching since February. Saying no to an offer with a salary attached felt insane while I was typing it.

The recruiter was fine about it. Said keep in touch, asked if she could send me things later, done in about ten seconds. Two days of dread for that.

The guilt is real, but companies pass on candidates without losing a minute of sleep, and you're allowed the same. I declined one and half a year later a better role came through a contact I'd made by being honest with that same recruiter.

I did the opposite. Took the maintenance role because I was scared, then spent the whole year applying again from inside it. Not a disaster and the money was real. But you paid two days of dread and I paid twelve months.

A product they've already told you is being sunset is a real reason, and you were right to walk. The thing people don't mention is that a clean no is memorable in a good way. I turned one down in March and the same recruiter came back in July with something much better.
