My family still asks when I'm getting a real job. Two years in.
Left a stable government-adjacent job to learn to code full time. Everyone was polite about it for about six months, then the questions started.
I'm employed now. Company, salary, more than I made before.
At a wedding last week my uncle asked when I'd be getting something permanent. I said the job is permanent. He said yes, but you know what I mean. I let it go and went to find the food.

AnonymousAnon My parents finally came around when I explained my pay in terms of their own field's years-of-experience equivalent. Often it isn't doubt, it's that 'software engineer' is just abstract to them. Two years in, you've long since proven it, the lag is on their side.

AnonymousAnon Two years in, employed, and it's still "when are you going to settle into something proper". I gave up on explaining and let the payslips do it slowly instead. My mother came around the month I flew her somewhere.

AnonymousAnon The uncle at the wedding is apparently a universal character. Mine asked whether my company was "registered".
