Started flagging a slipping task on day two instead of day five and my manager visibly relaxed
I used to go quiet when something ran long, hoping to claw it back before anyone noticed. It never worked and the conversation was always worse for the delay. Now the moment I'm past half my estimate with less than half of it done, I say so, with what I've tried and what I think is left. Not one person has been annoyed. They just can't help with a problem they only hear about on Friday afternoon.

AnonymousAnon Works, with one caveat — my last manager read early flags as "can't cope". So I started framing it as options instead of a problem: "I can have the simple version Thursday or the proper one Tuesday, which would you rather?" Same information, but it puts them in a decision rather than a rescue. Depends a lot on the manager, sadly.

AnonymousAnon The "what I've tried" half is what makes it land. Saying "this is running long" on its own drops the problem in their lap; saying it with where you're stuck reads as a status update instead of a rescue call. Started doing the same thing this year and honestly the surprise disappearing is worth more than looking fast ever was.
