The "any questions for us?" bit at the end keeps ambushing me

I prep for everything else. DSA, my projects, the whole tell-me-about-a-conflict routine. Then they ask if I've got questions and I say something about culture that I've clearly pulled out of the air four seconds earlier, and I can hear the energy in the call drop.

I know the advice is "ask something thoughtful". Problem is by minute fifty of a technical round my brain is soup and thoughtful isn't happening on demand.

Do people just keep three written down and read them off? Does that look as obvious from their side as it feels from mine?

What fixed it for me was dropping the "thoughtful question" framing entirely. Ask things you actually want to know because you might genuinely work there. What's the last thing that slipped and what happened. How code review works in practice. Who I'd be sitting with day to day. Those come out sounding real because they are, and you don't need any brain left to invent them at minute fifty.

Everyone reads them off. I keep four in a notes file and open it before every call. Not one person has ever remarked on it, and on video it just reads as glancing at notes, which is what someone prepared would be doing anyway.
