Reference check is next week and I haven't told my current manager I'm leaving yet

Reference check for a new offer is scheduled for next week and I still haven't told my current manager I'm leaving. Trying to figure out the least messy order of operations here — tell my manager first and risk an awkward few weeks if the offer falls through, or let the reference check happen quietly and hope nobody mentions it internally first.

AnonymousAnon Depends a lot on your relationship with the manager tbh. If it's a good one, they've probably seen people leave before and won't be shocked. If it's rocky, I get the instinct to wait.

AnonymousAnon I'd tell your manager first, honestly. Worst case with the offer falling through is awkward for a bit, but getting caught not telling them feels worse and harder to walk back from.
