Rejected in the final round last October. The same role just reopened. Does reapplying look desperate?
It was close. The recruiter actually called instead of emailing and said it came down to two people. She told me to stay in touch, which I assumed was the polite version of go away.
Role's back up, near identical description. Ten months of experience later I'd be a genuinely better candidate than the one they turned down.
Is there an etiquette to this? Apply cold and let the system sort it out, or email the recruiter first and reference the old process?

One thing I'd add: be ready for them to ask what's changed since last time, and have something concrete rather than "I've grown a lot." I said "last time I couldn't have designed the thing you asked me to design, here's what I've shipped since," and that was the whole conversation.

AnonymousAnon Email the recruiter. "Came down to two people" means there's a note in their system saying you were good, and a warm reply gets read in a way a cold application doesn't.
Worst case she doesn't answer and you apply through the portal anyway, which is exactly where you are right now. There's no downside here.
