Left a ten-year kitchen career to write code and nobody warns you about the pay cut year

Sous chef for six years before I touched a line of code. The bootcamp part people ask about a lot, the part they don't ask about is that my first dev job paid less than I made on the line with weekend rushes factored in. Eight months later a raise mostly closed the gap, but that first year was tight in a way I hadn't budgeted for. Don't regret it. Just wish someone had said the number out loud before I signed anything, would've saved some panic in month three.
