Cold messaged 40 people on LinkedIn about their teams, three replied, one turned into an actual referral
Wasn't asking for jobs directly, just short messages asking what their team actually works on day to day, genuinely curious. Most went nowhere, which I expected. Three had real conversations with me, and one of those offered to refer me a few weeks later once a role opened. Slow, mostly quiet feedback loop, but a three percent reply rate that occasionally turns into something feels a lot better than the zero percent I was getting cold applying.

AnonymousAnon I do a version of this too. The opener that's worked best for me is asking a specific question about something they actually shipped, not their team in general, it reads a lot less templated on their end.

AnonymousAnon How do you word the opener so it doesn't read like a job ask? I've tried something similar and mostly just get ignored.

AnonymousAnon 3% turning into an actual referral is honestly a way better hit rate than I expected. Might actually try this instead of just applying cold.
