Messaged a bootcamp alum I'd never met asking one specific question about her team and it turned into a referral

Found her through the alumni Slack, saw she worked somewhere I was interested in, and almost didn't send anything because the ask felt presumptuous. Kept the message to one specific question about how her team actually used the stack listed in the job posting, no "can we hop on a call," nothing vague. She answered in a few sentences, then asked if I'd applied yet, then offered to flag my resume internally without me asking. Whole exchange took maybe ten minutes of her time. Should've been doing this months ago instead of only cold-applying through the portal.
