First on-call rotation and I got paged during a launch I wasn't even supposed to be watching

Turns out 'shadow on-call for your first rotation' still means your phone can go off. Alert fired at 1am, I had no idea what half the dashboard even meant, and the senior on the thread talked me through it like it was completely normal. It was. Nobody expects you to know the system at 1am on day one, they just expect you to say so.

AnonymousAnon The senior talking you through instead of taking over is honestly a hiring signal in itself, wish more teams onboarded oncall that way instead of just throwing a runbook link at you.

AnonymousAnon 1am pages during your first rotation should be studied in a lab honestly. Glad the senior walked you through it instead of just fixing it themselves, that's the difference between a good oncall culture and a bad one.
