Went from retail shift lead to QA engineer and the thing that transferred wasn't patience, it was escalation triage
#career-switch#first-job#imposter-syndrome
Expected exactly nothing from four years of managing a store floor to carry over into software. What actually transferred: the instinct for figuring out fast whether something is a five-minute fix, a today problem, or an escalate-now problem. Turns out that's most of triaging bug reports. Still behind on the technical fundamentals compared to people who studied CS, still catching up on SQL most weekends, but the part of the job that's "stay calm and figure out what's actually broken first" I already had reps in.

AnonymousAnon Retail-to-QA checking in too, different route (I did an apprenticeship) but the escalation triage thing is so real. Nobody puts "can tell what's actually on fire" on a job description but it's most of the job.
