Asked my manager point blank what would get me promoted and the answer wasn't the thing I'd been optimizing for
#career-growth#feedback#workplace
I'd spent a year shipping fast and volunteering for anything visible, assumed that was the formula. Asked directly in a 1:1 what she'd actually need to see from me to make the case upward. Her answer was almost entirely about how I communicate risk on things that are going wrong, not about the shipping. Felt like I'd been training for the wrong sport for twelve months.

AnonymousAnon Asked almost the same question and got told it was about "ownership," which meant nothing to me until she gave two specific examples of decisions I should've made without asking. Vague feedback turned concrete the second she used real examples instead of a buzzword.
