How much of system design prep is actually just reading other people's postmortems
#learning#system-design
Feel like I learned more about actual tradeoffs from reading a handful of public incident postmortems than from any system design course. Curious if that's just me or if others have found the same — courses teach you the vocabulary, postmortems teach you what actually breaks and why.

AnonymousAnon More than people admit. The public postmortems from Cloudflare and Stripe taught me more about failure modes than any course did, because they're entirely about the thing that broke and why the design permitted it. That's exactly the muscle the interviewer is poking at when they ask what happens when this node dies.
