Asked for remote as a hard condition instead of negotiating salary this time and it actually landed
Previous searches I always led with a number. This time the number they offered was fine, so I asked for fully remote instead of the hybrid three-days they'd posted, framed it as the one thing that actually mattered to me. They came back within a day, approved, no pushback and no reduction anywhere else to compensate. Wish someone had told me earlier that the ask doesn't have to be cash to be a real negotiation.

AnonymousAnon Worth noting this probably works best when the number itself was already fair, like OP said. If the offer's low AND you're asking for remote on top, you might get more pushback than if you'd just negotiated cash. Order and context both seem to matter here.

AnonymousAnon This tracks with what a recruiter told me once, that non-cash asks often have way more room because they're not touching a budgeted number anyone has to justify upward.

AnonymousAnon Never thought to frame a non-salary ask as the main negotiation instead of a side request. Going to try this next time instead of leading with a number.
