Had an offer at 142k and almost pushed for 150. Instead I asked if I could log off by 3:10 most days for school pickup and make it up after my kid's in bed. Recruiter went quiet for a second, then said "honestly that's easier for us than more comp." Still not sure if I left money on the table. But three months in, nobody's blinked when I duck out, and I haven't had to explain myself once. If you're weighing this, ask the question early, before you sign anything, not after.

Prioritizing the pickup time over squeezing out more base is such an underrated move. Nobody talks about negotiating for schedule instead of just dollars.

Non-salary asks like that almost never come up in these negotiation threads and probably should more. Schedule flexibility compounds way more than an extra 2% base most months.

I hire for a small team—asks like that land when there's a concrete plan attached, not just "I need flexibility." The specific pickup time probably sold it more than the number would have.

Did you rehearse how you'd phrase it before the call, or just say it? I've got a similar ask coming up for a 4pm gym slot and I'm more nervous about the "does this read as less committed" read than the money itself.

Same boat. Took 8k less than the counter for a written no-meetings-before-10 clause so I could get my kid to school. Eighteen months in, that clause is worth more to me than the raise ever would've been.
