worked fully async with my team for a year and it exposed how much I used to rely on tone of voice to soften bad news

Turns out "this approach won't scale" reads completely differently in a Slack thread than said out loud with a smile. Had to actually learn to write things kinder on purpose instead of relying on delivery to do that work. Nobody taught this in any course I took.
