recruiter asked for salary expectations on the first call and I just made up a number, worked out fine but felt like gambling

Had done zero research going in, panicked, and threw out a number that felt vaguely reasonable. Found out later from a friend at the same company it was actually near the top of their range for the role. Got lucky this time but not doing that again, actually looked up real numbers before the next one.
