eleven years as a high school teacher and the classroom management skill that transferred was explaining things without sounding condescending
#career-switch#communication
Assumed nothing from teaching would carry over to engineering and mostly braced for starting from zero. Turns out explaining a concept to a room of confused fifteen year olds without making them feel dumb is basically the same skill as writing a good PR description or explaining a bug in standup. Did not see that one coming.

AnonymousAnon This makes me feel better about my own career change, I've been worried none of my old skills would count for anything here.

AnonymousAnon Former teacher here too and yes to all of this. The part nobody warns you about is how much of engineering communication is just scaffolding an explanation for whoever's in the room.
