Situation at home changed a few weeks after I'd accepted and I almost didn't bring it up out of fear it would look flaky this early. Manager said they'd rather keep me remote than lose me over a policy nobody enforces that strictly anyway. Wish I'd just asked sooner instead of sitting on it.
Companies quietly not enforcing the policy that strictly is doing a lot of work in this story though, worth remembering that's not universal. Definitely worth asking, just wouldn't assume every manager reacts the same.
This is encouraging actually, I've been sitting on a similar ask since I signed. Sounds like the fear of looking flaky was bigger than the actual risk.
