assumed the referral would skip the online assessment and it didn't, still had to grind through the same OA as everyone else

Felt a little deflated honestly, spent time I thought I'd saved stressing about whether the referral even mattered. Talked to the person who referred me and apparently it just gets your resume looked at, not a skip line. Passed the OA anyway but adjusted my expectations for next time.

Yep, this is basically universal in my experience. A referral gets a human to actually open your resume instead of it dying in an ATS, that's the whole benefit. Nice that people keep saying it out loud though since it's not obvious going in.
