did two years of freelance work before this and have no idea how to frame that on a resume for a full time role

Recruiters keep asking if the gig work counts as real experience and I never know how to answer without sounding defensive. It was real client work, invoices and deadlines and all, just no single company name to point to. How do people usually format this so it doesn't read as a gap with extra steps?
