manager said my work just needed more polish before a promotion got denied and wouldn't give me anything more specific than that

Asked three different ways for an actual example and kept getting the same vague answer back. Ended up asking a peer on a different team for blunt feedback on a recent project instead, which was uncomfortable but at least useful. Still don't know what 'polish' meant in the original conversation.
