practiced system design out loud in the shower and it sounds insane but it's the only thing that made the tradeoffs stick

The only quiet block in my day is the shower, so that's where system design tradeoffs started getting narrated out loud. Sounds ridiculous typing it out, but saying the reasoning instead of just reading it is what actually made it stick. Whiteboard sessions got noticeably smoother after a couple weeks of this.
