how do you talk about a layoff in interviews without it sounding like you're making excuses?

Got laid off in a round that took out a third of the team, nothing performance related, but every time I bring it up in an interview I feel like I'm over-explaining and it comes across defensive instead of just factual. Anyone found a version of this that actually lands clean?

AnonymousAnon Interviewers who've been through a layoff themselves usually don't need much explanation at all. The over-explaining instinct is understandable but it's often more for you than for them.

AnonymousAnon Keeping it to one short factual sentence and then immediately pivoting to what you did next has worked better for me than trying to fully explain the context every time.
