still write a new cover letter for every application even though I have no idea if it does anything beyond feeding the ATS keyword match

Spent an embarrassing amount of time last week on one for a role I really wanted, no idea if a human ever opens it before the resume gets scored. If anyone's had a recruiter actually reference something specific from a cover letter later in the process, I'd love to hear it, feels like writing into a void most of the time.
